Redskins v. Cowboys – Postgame, Several Ways of Saying the Same Thing

catchingsomeo2

As noted, there wasn’t a lot to be said about this loss. The team didn’t protect Jason Campbell, didn’t get to Tony Romo, and just basically didn’t convert its opportunities. How many different ways are there to make that point?

At least a few. Here’s Coach Zorn’s effort. Wordy, and with his characteristic optimism (which was much-needed, as optimism was thin on the ground tonight):

“We have to have an answer on some pressure. Our quarterback got hit a lot tonight, and we’ve got to have an answer there.

“Two things: one, we have to put pressure on the opposing quarterback, and then we have to keep people off of ours. I think that was the issue in the game, somewhat. It affects playcalling, from my standpoint, and also it allows the opponent to— y’know, if we can’t get to the QB, it allows him to take a little more time. It puts pressure on the DBs to cover for a long time as well.

“And yet, with all of that said, I thought we did an excellent job keeping their run game from breaking anything, forcing them to throw. And then our DBs and guys coming up with plays. We got picks tonight. We did what we needed to do on defense to win the football game. You won’t hear Greg Blache saying that, because they’ll notice some things we could do better as well, but I thought our defense battled hard.

“We even did a nice job offensively in areas. Our run game wasn’t bad, we actually got some yardage in the run game. But when you’re trying to mix, it’s hard to mix thinking about what you really can do in the pass protection schemes.

“And I think that’s where we really need to improve. Pass blocking and our route-running. If we could pass protect just a little bit more, honestly, get just a little more time, we’ll have some things open down the field.”

Most people’s assessments could be summed up much more briefly. Here’s Campbell:

“We got the ball at the beginning of the game. We tried to control the ball more and pick up the momentum, but we never really got back into a rhythm and picked back up from where we had left off. A lot of it had to do with things we just weren’t doing.”

Here’s Pete Kendall, using a car metaphor:

“We seem to be stalling a little bit, and we need to find a way to get it revved back up, that’s for sure.”

Rock Cartwright, stating the blatantly obvious but exceedingly true:

“We just came up short today, and it’s kind of frustrating when you work that hard and put in so much work during the week and then come up short. We’ve just gotta score points. If we score points, we’ll win football games.

Chris Samuels, in very, very brief:

Dallas played great. They executed when the game was on the line. They got it done and we didn’t.”

I asked Fred Smoot about what he said to Darrell Green in the pregame, and even that conversation landed in the same place.

“I just told Darrell congrats. I also had to say to him, I had told him back before he was done with football that he was a first ballot guy, and he didn’t feel like that. So we were just talking and I was just telling him that I was gonna go out there and try to make some plays for him.

    “Evidently, I didn’t do enough.”

  1. Please throw the ball downfield activate malcom kelly get rid of non playin shawn springs who is costing us money and play with some heart redskins looked like crap tonite but props to Portis he is a beast hurt or not

  2. The Redskins offense has slowing been going backwards, scoring less and less each game. 2 yard passes arent getting the defenses to drop back. The offense needs to open it up deeper even if its incomplete passes to get more working room. Seems everyone now knows bring 6-7 guys and the offense can’t move the ball. Jason C is getting sacked too much, holding the ball. If I were Mr. Synder I would NOT look into a longer term contract unless he shows improvement. The defense is doing a great job, but if the offense can’t score more than 10 points a game, they will go 6-10 after a great start. Jim Zorn, start sending the ball down range, scramble Jason outside the pocket, make things happen ~ Remember when you were with the Hawks, you moved and good things happened. Let her fly!!!! See you in Seattle next week, 4 trips and no wins there, let this be different! The wife is killing me on spending the money to see you guys when your always losing in Seattle! We will be the Skins Fans Yelling for you! Good Luck!

  3. I said the same thing last week…Brennan NEEDS TO BE the Starting Quarterback for this Team, IF The Redskins WANT To Win…As stated last week…With the Redskins Solid Defense, and Brennan as Quarterback The Redskins would be The BEST TEAM In The League…

  4. Brennan as the starting QB? We got rookie WRs that can’t get on the field cause they don’t know the plays. So our rookie QB is ready and is the answer? Please! Is Brennan going to block for himself. Give me a break.

  5. Yeah offensive line blocking for a pass would be nice but campbell is eye balling moss way to much and not looking around and other teams cant block and yet there qb makes plays we need a change somewhere now before its to late

  6. Good game! Should have been about 24-10 if it weren’t for a few bad plays. Goooooo Cowboys!

  7. Dennis, you’re totally right. Our offense has been getting worse and worse. We had similar problems with the passing game at the beginning of the season and what did we do? Zorn let Cambell run the offense from Shotgun and it worked. Since then we’ve abandoned the shotgun entirely and the passing game has gotten worse and worse. I think Cambell is having the same problem with his receivers being too small and not being able to see them.

I honestly think if we went back to running the shotgun once in a while we’d be doing fine again. We’d at least be able to take some shots deep and then those 2-3 yard screens and dump passes would actually take the other teams by surprise.

This is a huge let down. Our record still looks okay, but not for long if we’re going to continue the downgrade every week.

  8. Is it possible that Collins will start taking more reps? I’m from Hawaii and a Colt fan, but I think it’s better not to rush him.
Collins did really well last year. It will be interesting to see what practice will be like this week.

  9. This lost does not surprise me. This game was the same as the Steelers. Skins score first and then played like they won, the game was over. Two thoughts. (1) I am sorry, but J.C. is to inconsistant. I have never liked his playing. It is ashamed that we have a Q.B. with great potential just going to waste on the bench. J.C. has been here for a few years now and has not improved. Well, you think he has one game and then the next you are wondering what in the world is going on. It is time to move on. (2) How does anyone expect to win a game if you can not get first downs? Last night it got to where I was not looking for the end zone, I was just looking for the first down markers to see how close we could get to it. When I saw the first half and how J.C. was playing and noticing that our Defense was on the field more. I could not take it. I thought I was going to have a stroke and I changed the channel. If I was ever to stoop so low as to bet against the Skins, I should have last night, cause I would have won.
Put Colt in. It is time to give this guy some play time before we loose him and get stuck with J.C. as starter for another year. What have we got to loose?

  10. At least all of us skins’ fans know enough now. No more wait and see if he gets better crap. JC sucks, he does not have a head for the game. I saw, on seperate occasions last night, Moss and then Portis on the field trying to get his head in the game, and he sat there with that stupid blank look on his face. Wasting timeouts, poor team management, and he couldn’t read a defense to save his sorry life. I don’t know who the answer is, BUT IT AIN”T JC

  11. I must say it did my heart a lot of good to see that beautiful 90,000 seat stadium filled to capacity with redskins fans as they watched their team’s defense get VIOLATED, by Barber on the last drive of the game, as he CRAMMED the football down their THROAT. Maybe Marishka Hargitay and her SVU crew can console you after this one. Oh, and a special thanks to all you deadskins fans for posting your congratulations on the cowboys home site after your win earlier this season. Karma is a *****.

  12. Whats up with Carlos Rogers, he’s been pick on the last couple of games. Get rid of Shawn Springs (man its football, you have to play hurt). Hats off to Chris Horton. Now to the OFFENSE,
    1. Jason Campbell is killing us, MAN PLEASE GET A CLUE
    2. Hats off to Clinton Portis, and Chris Cooley.
    3. We need to have a good draft pick for that O-Line, how do you say OLD AND SLOW.
    4. Jim Zorn, Where is the PASSING GAME.

  13. Man, talk about throwing a guy under the bus. We talking about how bad Jason Campbell is when he’s the first guy in the NFL to go 8 games without an interception? When everyone was eating their words from preseason and saying how good he’s looked since then? I’d say blame this on the offensive line, not on JC. JC’s the man and I don’t want to see Brennan for at least a couple more years. When have you seen Colt play well enough to win it for us?? In the preseason against other 3rd stringers? Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s got great talent but he’s definitely not the answer. Yeah, JC needs to throw it down the field a lot more often, but that’s not grounds to toss the guy.
    HTTR

  14. Its easy when you throw 3-10 yard passes. When you have no guts to throw down field, everything on paper looks good (no interception).

  15. Please ask Zorn about all the talk on sports radio this morning about the Skins partying it up Friday night? I mean Clinton Portis drunk on Friday night? Huge game Sunday? Please tell me thats not true

  16. That’s pathetic if you think Colt Brennan should start. The problem is the offensive line and the team’s unwillingness to run the football more. It’s a Gibbs-assembled football team–you’ve got to run it first.

JC holds onto the football too long sometimes. For that, you have a legitimate gripe. If he’s scrambling outside the pocket, just throw it away if you don’t see a running lane. So what if it’s incomplete?

It’s the offensive linemen. They’re all aging and overpaid, and they can’t pass block. Bench Jansen. He’s done. Cut him in the off-season. Thanks for the memories, Jon. You were great!

As for Zorn, too few runs, and too little deep passes. Gibbs compensated for the deficiencies with this team. The only way you protect the qb in D.C. is to run 40 times a game and throw it 25. That’s it. Whatever happened to intelligent players and coaches?

And finally, as for Dallas. The optimism of their fans is as big as the guts on their wives and children. “Big D” is vulnerable. They’re not going to make the playoffs.

  17. Man I agree, to much eye-ballin’ Moss man! And he wasn’t even open..! Sheesh! What in the world do we have to do? Yes, dink and dunk does make your stats look better on paper… No int’s, also no freakin touchdowns either! He doesn’t even throw an average of 1 touchdown per game! That’s fricken rediculous!!! Yeah the line plays a part to, but Lord Jesus he has time sometimes to survey, I just think his IQ jive low man honestly… Constantly just looking for Moss to bail him out! Lord help us! Then we ran that fricken hitch play one time to fricken many!! Hint: NOT WORKING JIM!!! Use Devin more please! Not just 2 plays a game! He can’t be that dum to the offense to not get any balls thrown his way… But again I guess JC steady lookin for Santana all day. We must overcome someday!

  18. What is wrong with Skins fans… Anyone calling out JC is crazy at this point. How do you throw the ball down field when your on your back… I like Brennan as well but JC has talent. We know what he can do when he has time. Defenses know the Skins run the ball. To open up up the run game you have to pass. And vise versa. But you cant expect to make completions short or long when you have two and three D players coming through the O-line. Last night was a game we should of won. We had ample opportunity. The problem is not with our Quarterback… We need some young guys on the O-line.

As a Skins fan, the team has exceeded my expectations already. Two bad games in a row is a shame to see. But i dont think it is enough for true fans to call for JCs head.

  19. I have been frustrated with Campbell at times too. But Campbell is not calling the plays out there. That is evident. He has the arm to throw it down field, they just aren’t calling the plays. Santana is a fast receiver, why not air it out to him a couple of times. Or at least have him run the routes that take him up the field to clear the safety out of the box. Make it more of challenge for the D to play you. It’s insane that Santana isn’t leading the league right now with us playing in the west coast offense. Good thing we are going back to Seattle next week so we can see how it’s supposed to go. They suck but I bet they throw the ball downfield more than we do.

  20. You people are crazy saying bench JC. Yall weren’t saying that a few weeks ago. It all starts with the O-line. They are starting to look like the cowgirls O-line. How many coordinators has he had since he was at Auburn? Todd Collins won’t get it done in this offense and Brennan isn’t ready yet. JC can and will get it done.

  21. Why is that so called fans blame the QB when everyone in the trenches including your head coach, players and management said that ‘you have to protect the QB’?! which was not done vs. dallas or pittsburg or detroit but it’s JC fault? ya’ll are ridiculous. JC takes a beating on the field and we as fans wanna whoop up on him too? Bandwagon fans is what you are, everyone was on his jock after n.o., arizona, philly, and dallas in week 4. i’m so disgusted with our redskins fans. If I was a QB for us, I’d love to go play some place else where people know football and appreciate the team during ups and downs- DC is not that town.

There are some real fans out there and people who know football but it seems like the bandwagoners are a whole heck of a lot louder. Place blame where it needs to be and that is on our OLine.

  22. I can’t believe there are still people making excuses for Jason Campbell. Last year the Skins started out winning close games before Campbell’s weaknesses were exposed. This year is starting to look like a repeat of last year. It doesn’t matter if Campbell has a low interception percentage. If you are constantly checking the ball down because your too slow going through your second , third and fourth reads and you can’t find the open man. You won’t throw many interceptions but you won’t be able to move the ball and you won’t score many points either. A quarterback that holds the ball too long also puts pressure on the offensive line and is sacked far more than a quarterback that has a quick release. Todd Collins exposed Jason Campbell’s flaws when he took over last year and showed what the Skins offense could do with a quarterback that could find the open man and was accurate. The Skins will throw this season away if they continue to play Campbell. I don’t care how good of a coach Zorn is, Portis most likely won’t make it through the year and the defense will wear down if Campbell continues to start. If Zorn had been allowed to have an open competition at quarterback Colt Brennan would easily have won. He may have been playing against third string defenses but he was also throwing to third string receivers. He didn’t even get any reps until training camp and he showed a faster release, better field vision, better accuracy and a far better command of the west coast offense than Campbell or Collins. Anyone that thinks Campbell should start over Brennan just because of experience obviously doesn’t know much about football. How could Brennan be worse than a guy who constantly checks the ball down because his primary receiver is covered and he can’t read a defense.

  23. hey the skins are doing pretty well going done the field…if you look at it the redskins need to work on their redzone offense, which is pretty awful i believe that if the skins can score everytime there in the redzone the could at least be 7-2

  24. 8-2*

  25. oh btw say that colt should start over JC is crazy…JC is a great qb and for the past couple of weeks he has been hit, sacked and everything in between the oline is horrible n chris sameuls is still better than most of our oline with his injury……everytime campbell threw the ball he was hit after…….great protection for JC = more completions!!!!

  26. Jason Campbell makes the offensive line look bad because he holds the ball too long. A quarterback that has a fast release would not be taking the sacks that Campbell is taking. For all of you that think Campbell has been playing great what games have you been watching? The Skins have been winning games by the skin of their teeth because of clever playcalling, Portis having a great season, Santana Moss’s playmaking and their defense. Every game the Skins have lost this season has been because of their inability to score. Campbell isn’t even averaging a touchdown pass a game. Even with limited experience Colt Brennan is a much better quarterback than Campbell. John Madden raved about Colt Brennan during pre-season but I suppose he’s crazy too. Well I guess the Skins will waste this season and possibly next season and fire a potentially great coach before they figure out that they wasted a first round pick on Campbell just like they did on Patrick Ramsey three years before.

  27. I can’t believe someone who calls them a Redskins fan is ready to walk away from Jason Campbell. I bet you all weren’t saying that a few weeks ago. Also, I don’t know of any quarterback who can be good when they get as much pressure as Jason does usually and did last night against Dallas. Payton Manning wouldn’t help if he is getting sacked all the time. I think you guys who are against Campbell should be mad at the o-line first because when he has time he has proven to be good this year. When we were 6-2 were you calling for Colt Brennan?

  28. JC will get things turned around this coming week and all the Haters will be jumping on his back again just like the beginning of the season. He is the man for the job. Ya every great QB has their flaws. JCs is that he holds the ball longer than our offensive line is able to block… guess thats his fault. Why do the O linemen get paid again. Please remind me. We are 6-4 not 4-6. Our season is not even close to over. Just cause Snyder and Cerrato past out white flags last night does not mean we should wave them today.

  29. hey i just colt brennan highlights on youtube and he is amazing i think we should at least give him a game this season campbell is a great qb dont get me wrong but he takes at least 5 secs in the pocket which is really bad i just think zorn should tell campbell that his job is on the line if he doesnt get his act togather….collins is a great qb but i dont think we knows to much about the west coast offense….colt brennan broke so many records and had great long and accurate passes in preseason which campbell doesnt do. if we either dont get our oline in better shape and give campbell as much time as he wants then we need a well rounded qb who does waste all their time in the pocket waiting for a sack

  30. IT’S so dhard being a redskins fan here in tennessee since i dont get to go to the games i just get to watch them when i can and everytime there on tv they lose whats up with them can they not step up in primetime geez i mean i live in a state where the team is undefeated and everyday im taking up for my redskins aginst those crappy titans who have not played the type teams we have its unbearable i cant say i didnt see this comming for years they have been doing this we need more plays on the offense i like coach zorn but we need big play offense if we get down its a struggle for us to come back especially with the type of line break downs we have been havin

  31. Oh and p.s the o-line is terrible and jason does hold the ball a longtime its a combination of the two thats killin us benching him is not gonna be the solution because puttin colt in would be a mistake at this point in his career go back and look at the hawaii and georgia game and see how colt does against a pro style defense

  32. .vs Steelers: 0 free topping
    .vs Cowboys: 1 free topping
What happened to all my free pizza toppings!!!

  33. Lets shake things up agains Seattle. The saying is if you do the same thing over and over don’t expect different results.

Punt Returns: Send Hall or someone else back, save Moss though. 4-5 yards is not cutting it.

Move the pocket and send 2 guys deep early and often, try some allyoop passes to the tall rookies let them go up for it.

Bring in Sellers to spell Clinton, he is our Brandon Jacobs, no-one likes a big man running full steam at them.

Defense: Bring Horton or Landry on every pass down. I noticed the defense looking to engage in blocks instead of tracking the ball, go after the ball and strip it.

Zorn: Pull out the mis-direction plays early, tires the defense opening up the running later.

If all else fails blitz all 11 men!!!!!

  34. I realized Jason Campbell wasn’t going to be a good quarterback after watching him nearly cost the Skins a playoff berth last year. If Todd Collins hadn’t replaced an injured Campbell the Skins would have had a losing record for the 2007 season. I said Brennan should be the starter before the regular season started and I said Campbell wasn’t a good quarterback when the Skins were winning. It has been said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. In order for the Skins to fix their offensive problems in their passing game they have to first admit they have a problem at quarterback. I don’t care if Campbell worked with Bill Walsh for 10 years he would still be a below average quarterback. He is too slow going through his reads, is indecisive , has poor field vision, can’t read a defense and is inaccurate. He is a slightly smarter and more mobile Patrick Ramsey. For those of you that think he is a good quarterback wake up! He doesn’t have it and he never will. It’s unfair for Zorn to be blamed for a guy that was drafted under Gibbs watch. With the exception of the 2000 Ravens no one would be able to go deep into the playoffs with him as their starting quarterback.

  35. I’m so glad that Clinton Porpoise played. That way we don’t have to listen to all the Deadskins fans b@#$ing that the reason you lost was because he didn’t play.
In the words of rhe great Artie Lange:…”WAHHHHH!”
And thanks to all the Deadskins fans that gave such “posiitve” support at dallascowboys.com after you squeaked out the victory early this season at Texas Stadium: Paybacks a Bee-yotch!!! And to make the victory all the sweeter…it come on the same night as the “Darrell Green and Art Monk ring ceremony”.
    CHOKE ON THAT LOSERS!

  36. Hey Starpower, the Cowboys may have a lot of stars but Jason Garrett is a horrible offensive coordinator . Everyone figured out his offensive scheme last year and in the playoffs Tony Romo goes from looking like Roger Staubach to looking like Ryan Leaf. Romo is probably the biggest choke artist I’ve ever seen play quarterback. The Cowboys may get a wild card berth but they will get bounced right out with Tony Romo as their quarterback. The only reason the Skins lost is because their offense with Campbell is anemic and they could only muster 10 points.

  37. quit making excuses we won you suck

  38. Two words………….Marion Barber. Didn’t anyone on the defense notice he was getting the ball like 10 times in a row? Come on………we are better then this crap! I live in Dallas and the first thing I did this mornig was take both papers and put them in the recycle bin where they belong. We need to get it back together or we can totall forget post season unless our goal is to watch it from our family rooms. We’re behind you guys but you get paid an awful lot for such poor performances. Get it together, and soon! I for one and tired of stupid plays and stupid excuses. We’re too good to be playing at this level. We were definitely better then the Cry-boys!!

  39. hey betsy how were you better, you lost the game dummy

  40. just bc we lost the game doesnt mean the cowgirls were better then us when you get inside the opponents 30 yeard line three times and you shoot yourself in the foot means you kill yourself

  41. actually we beat you in passing yards rushing yards and time of posession so yes dummy we were better than you

  42. also first downs and sacks. get over it

  43. It’s hard to figure out JC. He’s athletic, great size, strong arm, and can make sustained drives. But sometimes he fizzles. I think we should give him more time, he’s had more good games than bad games this year.
I think the NFL clock for a QB is about 2 sec’s? If O-line can’t give him that much time, then I blame the o-line. If JC just doesn’t have the NFL speed in his head, then maybe coach Zorn will make a change.

  44. Hey stone…The only choke artists I saw was the entire Deadskin team! They were so embarrased they couldn’t wait to get off the field…I think they even faked injuries to avoid further embarrasment (see Randle-El!). And, if everyone has figured out Garrett’s scheme…how come the Deadskins couldn’t stop it? I agree Romo has yet to prove himself in the playoffs and until he does, he won’t be considered a great QB. The Deadskins lost beacuse our Defense stoned them time after time after time. Peat Moss didn’t do anything thanks to T-New, Clit-on Porpoise didn’t do anything, Chriisy Fooley was a non-factor and Jasmine Campbell looked like just like he did when he wrote his SAT’s: LOST!
And that’s exactly what happened…your team got their butts whipped in every facet and…LOST!
    Time of possession: Dallas
    Rushing: Dallas
    Passing: Dallas
    Sacks: Dallas
    Win: Dallas
    LOSERS: Deadsins!
    Period, Exclamation Point!
Funny…I don’t see anyone trash-talking over at dallascowboys.com after this game.

  45. starpower22 a good butt whupping usually shuts people up. especially when you point out every area they got their butts kicked. how can anyone with a brain argue it

  46. It’s funny how at one point the cowgirls season was just about going down the drain, and now all of a sudden they win one wittle game against skins and now there the best! Its funny because that ONE win came by no more than 4 points, and now cowgirls are no longer under the radar. I BET they still wont make it to the playoffs, and if they do, first game they’ll b washed out. Romo will get his little pinkie hurt again, and bring back BAD Johnson! YES skins offense struggled. Inconsistency to score points, but we r still the better team POINT BLANK. Our defense is still unstoppable, NO MATTER WAT. I promise u not if you go back and look at that game you’ll at least find 5 holding penelties on dallas mainly caused by cry baby owens. And also that interception from campbell he def didnt have possesion of that ball, but i wont complain any longer, a win is a win..but we all know that wen it all matters at the end, you dallas wimps will be on the outside looking in while we will be playin in. AND gave jason some time, er body is so quick to blame him. COLT wont bring you any better luck, SO SHUT UP AND STOP WHINNING.

  47. I have been a fan from the time of the merger in 1972.I have seen this team ,time after time,an again; to have great potential ,but lose it in the end .It comes down to one word:”EXCECUTION”.it’s not like the day”s of “Slinging Sammy Baugh; orSonny Jergerson or Joe Theisman or Doug Williams or even Mark Ripkin, who in my mine was not the greatest QB in the league. What we had in the 30,s an 40,s in the early 70,s an early an late 80,s;an the brief 90,s. Even a team with a losing record can beat you on any given Sunday , just look what the Browns did to the G -men . I really feel this team has that potential to put it togeather an make a run for the playoffs . No team is going to duplicate what a team had in the past . What Joe Gibbs done was great ;the first time ;. an the second time different ; still made it to the playoffs 2 out of 4yrs.But you see ; even with the lost of probilly; would have been the greatest safety who ever live{my opinion of course in Shawn Taylor; they still manage to pull it togeather.Tennessee Titans , you see what i mean when a team comes togeather plays week in week out . When it is your time an you excecute as a team it will work . An that is what they need to do if they want too ;.not just to make a statement ;but to have their own identity as a ‘TEAM’.Jim Zorn is a rookie head coach for the first time ; an by the way coach Gibbs went 0-5 the first time 8-8 to finish then the super bowl run .I am not saying they are going to go an win the super this year or next season .But give .Jim zorn time at 6-4 his first year an i believe they will.

  49. steve we turned the ball over twice had numerous peneties and still kicked your butts. so quit saying your better than us because your not. as a matter of fact the way you guys have been playing the last month i would say its a possibility two other teams from texas could beat you. that would be the longhorns and the red raiders. LMAO in dallas
