Well, it appears to be official. Say hello to the guy who used to go by Lil Prime Time, and goodbye to the guy who was recently called “a cross between Malcolm X and Charles Barkley”: DeAngelo Hall passed his physical today, and Leigh Torrence has been waived to make room on the roster.

There’s no press conference, no immediate media availability, nothing like that. As with Shaun Alexander, this signing is being handled more like what you’d expect based on the guy’s current role (as a bottom of the roster midseason move) than on his previous accomplishments, which strikes me as a good approach. We’ll be able to hear more from Hall, the coaches, and everyone else on Monday, when the team gets back to work, presumably with Hall on the practice field.

  1. Thank god no more watching leigh torrence getting burned on the field

  2. Leigh played solid football I don’t agree with cutting him for a locker room cancer. Hall is not being asked to come in and be the number one guy and hopefully he excepts that role. If he gets torched by slot receivers he’s a bigger bum than what I thought. On a big plus side lets hope we see him at PR and KR.

  3. How about we send Tryon right out the door along with him?

  4. Leigh Torrence was terrible. So is Tryon. This eliminates one terd from the punchbowl.

  5. Lets wait on the “cancer” remarks he was right about petrino, and i guarantee every player in Oakland is looking for the door… so lets at least give him a couple games before making a judgement

  6. Excellent perspective with this comment Matt:

That’s exactly what this is, and let’s face it, Hall IS BETTER THAN TORRENCE.

  7. Cutting Torrence was dumb. Hall is a great no risk pick up. Torrence was a great number 4 or 5 CB. He gets burned when we ask him to be a number 1 or 2. Clearly he wasn’t that. But he is WAY better than Tryon. Why would we keep Tryon and cut a guy who at least plays on Sunday?

  8. Tryon is a rookie that has room to improve torrence wasnt improving at all he still gets burned and still sucked he shoulda been cut allong time ago and im glad they did it now

  9. Jeff makes a good point. Perhaps Hall has not played well this year because he was in Oakland. Although that shouldn’t mean a hill o’ beans, let’s give him the benefit of the doubt. This upcoming game against Dallas will be a great test. While it is unclear which CB position Hall will play, i.e. #1,2,3, or 4, one thing is for certain. He will get challenged.

Maybe the burgundy and gold will help him find his mojo!

On another note, if Malcolm Kelly’s knee is still not ready, he’ll probably go to IR and Torrence will be back with the team. Maybe…it’s anybody’s guess.

  10. Oakland sucks the motivation out of everyone. Honestly, Randy Moss was awful there and now he’s at least “pretty good” in New England.

I’ve been doing some reading on his past and he doesn’t seem anywhere near the Pac Man Jones cancer. He stuck up for Vick, which I will give him a pass on since they were friends at VT, but other than that…I don’t know of a single thing that has been an issue with him. He talks, like almost all CBs and WRs (even on our team, Smoot and Landry, both of whom I love) but that’s not unusual for the position.

I’m actually liking this signing more now than ever. I wish Torrence the best, but this guys at least his equal (hahaha extreme understatement). If he’s our number 4, we’re not risking much and we’re not losing anything, then we let him go at the end of the season.

  11. Hey Matt,

You’ve got to tell us what the practice chatter on D is like next week. I imagine Hall will be subdued for a few days but eventually it’ll pick up, I’m sure. Can you imagine Washington, Smoot, Hall, and whoever else is generally a talker? That’s got to be interesting.

  12. i feel bad for leigh in the sense that he was a person every one already had that team chem with, but when he’s not proforming he’s gotta go, we needed depth and the team has done an exellent job, remember football is a business. but i do believe De’Angelo will fit into the chem as soon as he gets to know everyone i like how Hall sticks close and supports his friends, i.e Vick, even though….you know.

  13. It’s a fresh start for Hall. What he has done in the past with other teams has absolutely nothing to do with this team this year. He’s not the only player that couldn’t play for oakland. In my mind right now, he is innocent until proven guilty. Don’t worry about Leigh, he will be employed very soon. Another year or two and Leigh will be starting for a team in the league. Jacksonville????????? G. Williams will bring him in

Nick, i certainly hope DHall ACCEPTS his role and dosen’t take EXCEPTION to it…

  15. plus maybe he can hold on to a pick lol

  16. I hope DHall follows the precedent (too strong of a word?) set by Randy when he went to NE. I didn’t like Leigh, as he was the one who gave up the big play that had us lose to the Rams.. and he can’t really tackle that well from what I have seen.

The locker room will keep D’Angelo in check should he try to start anything. The Redskins have been lucky to have not had anyone talk shit and rip apart the team so.. lets hope it stays that way.

  17. Between the coaches and the veteran players, there are enough guys to keep Hall in line if he crosses it. It’s not him being an off the field distraction I’m worried about, it’s his play on the field. I’m hoping it’ll be like a Randy Moss situation where Oakland is the place for good players to stink it up, be traded to another team and live up to their potential.

  18. Jeff hit the nail on the head…we now have a CB who can CATCH the ball who is also not injury prone (Springs)

that pittsburgh game is muuuch different if Carlos picks that ball and takes it to the house like he should have.

  19. none the less carlos is still a beast…..beleive that
but seriously STOP USING THE WORD CANCER, the jerk off who started using that word is rediculous.
d.hall is not T.O. or PACMAN. tell me the worst thing he has done and why he should be chastised for it, and don’t bring up vick, they were freaking VT and pro teamates. Don’t call him a damn cancer for supporting a friend, i can see just how loyal you guys would be to your friends…jeez…..

  21. Joel,

The fact that he went to VT in the first place marks him down 10 times in my book. j/k Just some Wahoo love man.

I agree, can’t knock the guy for supporting his long time friend. However, that Hokie thing….well.

  22. I like this signing. I’m sorry Torrence is gone because I think he is definitely better than Tryon. Just because Tryon was a draft pick doesn’t mean we should keep him. I really like Springs, but with all his injuries the last couple of years and his age, we need to look to the future and Tryon isn’t it. I wish Torrence all the best and wish Hall the best as well. I think we’re a better team for having signed him. I hope he’s a better player for having signed with us. Al Davis is suffering from old timers disease and needs to retire.

  23. Matt, is there any word on how well he passed the physical or anything of that sort?

  24. DHall is The corner that we needed on our team. All of you haters wil see the effect that DHall will bring to this team. Remember 5 years ago we had a shutdown corner in CBailey, now look at him now, he cant cover nuthin’ so DHall is a beast at corner, give him a chance to prove himself. well he is a 2 time all pro.

  25. I hope this work pays major dividends. Leigh Torrance may not have been a big-time corner, but he was a valuable special teams guy and has been a member of the Redskins for a few years, so he knows the locker-room and the system. DeAngelo Hall is not a high character guy, he doesn’t know the defense, and he hasn’t recently played special teams coverage units, to say nothing of the fact that the message behind this move is the team values Justin Tryon’s limited upside over Leigh Torrance’s actual gameday production.

Hopefully not a silly move, but I’m skeptical in the extreme.

  26. I think we made a good investment signing DeAngelo Hall. We got him for cheap/young and most importantly he could be a potential replacement for Springs in the future. Excellent move and I think we will see instant impact.

  27. Yo for real, on a real note, Leigh was horrible in coverage. I can’t count with my ten fingers how many times he got burned. He’s right up there, right behind the receiver, because he’s fast but somehow someway, the dude never made a play. The biggest play of him during the season? That one tip to Carlos, and that was accidental. Good move, I agree with it. Now let’s hurry up and put Malcom on IR and get a damn receiver. I’m all for Billy McMullen or Anthony Mix.

  28. Agree with Kyu above….If Malcom Kelley is not ready tomorrow…move on. Both Billy McMullen and Anthony Mix are available. Both are big receivers who know the Redskinz way. If both are healthy and ready I would opt for either over the WRs on the practice squad…at least initially. Bring them in. Try them out…..Pick one and lets go. We need some contributors at WR beyond the three primary starters.

I hope next year the organization gets in the heads of draft picks early and selects gamers who will come to camp ready to learn and contribute. Yes we’ve had some this year but…..We are still waiting on Devin T and MK to show up.

Oh and will a coach or vet please bite into Devin Thomas and tell him to stop acting like he has accomplished something as a Redskinz……with all this pregame and post play prancing and stancing. So far all he has done is……? Gotten some penalties….run into Santana……..But he sure acts like he is really somebody. There is confident or even cocky from a contributor….OK….I’ll take it. Then there is….look at me…I look ridiculous.

Bring back Billy or Anthony to help get this offense moving!!!

  29. I think the redskins signing Hall was a good move. I also think anyone could have been better than Leigh Torrance. Every time I saw him in the game I knew the opposite team would throw the ball his way because he could not stop the receiver and most of the time was for a big play downfield. I am surprised Leigh lasted as long as he did.

  30. I would like to see Mix back on the team.

  31. Here’s another positive note, I’ve never heard of Hall being slammed for not playing all out. He may be a “me” guy, but he’s got better hands than TO. hahaha

  32. I am surprised how many people did not like Torrence, he is only a third year player and he was asked to do a lot. Hall has a big head and we are very competitive in our secondary, not sure where and how he will fit in. Torrence probably was dropped of Tryon because he had the bigger salary. If that wasn’t the reason why, I would rather have Torrence than Tryon.

  33. Leigh is way better then Hall, we’ll see .. Watch

  34. Leigh Torrence sucked. He was terrible at corner, doesn’t matter if he was asked to play 2nd or 3rd corner the fact is he sucked. And even worse, he was terrible at special teams, the one area where a player of his low caliber is expected to contribute. I don’t know how many times a well-placed punt bounced right in front of his face and went into the endzone for a touchback this year. he has terrible awareness for a guy that’s supposed to be a smart stanford grad.

And why are people saying that he’s better than Deangelo Hall are you kidding me?? FIrst of all he’s 2 years younger than leigh torrence and has already been to 2 pro bowls… Let’s look at this year’s production, the main stat that you can track for corners, interceptions… Hall has 3, smoot+rogers+torrence+springs combined have 2.

Before you go out and call him a cancer have some faith in the leadership that we have here with the redksins. It’s one of the most overlooked values of this team. We have great veterans that lead by example (on defense especially) and they will not tolerate any crap from him. I guarantee he will know his place in this locker room.

  35. Andreas well said. Defense, special teams, Leigh SUCKS! It’s so funny to hear Leigh saying he was ‘so suprised’ hahaha. Come on now, did he think he was really that good?

  36. All you people hating on D. Hall are crazy. The man has been in the league 5 years and been to 2 pro bowls. So what he was having a bad year in Oakland. Who doesn’t have bad years in Oakland? Look at Randy Moss in Oakland and look at him now. This is a big upgrade from Torrence’s sorry @$$. All of you saying this is a bad move will eat your words by the end of the season.

  37. I agree with the majority on this one. The risk vs. reward of this deal definitely favors the Redskins. One commentator stated that this is a chance for Hall to prove that he is still a playmaker and potentially sign a long term deal (not necessarily with the Skins) at the end of the season. If he continues as he did with the Raiders then the Skins aren’t out much.

  38. Got me Bill. I wrote it pretty fast bud. Anyways, I think everyone loves Halls name. Just because espn said he was good all the sudden he’s Deion. My favorite Hall moment was in the preseason he shaved I own you 85 on the back of his head. I’m not a huge Chad Johnson fan, but he made Hall look like a complete goon that game. That’s not the only time this has happened either. He’s far from a shutdown corner, BUT lets hope he realizes he has to get his act together or he’s not going to get another big payday, just because he’s Deangelo Hall, and we get a great two or three months from this guy.

  39. This years first game against the Giants someone went out at corner and Leigh stepped in the second half, and I remember getting on here and everyone saying oh the secondary was good once Leigh stepped in. I wanna hear why he sucked? I’ve only seen him get burned once this year and yes it was a big play, but those under thrown balls are tough to defend. He doesn’t get thrown at, and I don’t know if everyone knows this but that’s a good thing. He was a little undersized but who cares he was a gamer. He’ll start for another team and there getting a really solid corner.

  40. Leigh is a saint now. I am glad he got work. Sucks that we lost him. Tryon better turn out to be a solid number 5.
