Monday Night Off-Site Tailgate: The National Zoo

I didn’t get to see much of the tailgating scene at last night’s game, although what I did see was just about as overrun with Steelers fans as the rest of the stadium. There was something of a unique tailgate downtown, though: the Great Ape House at The National Zoo thought the orangutans might enjoy getting in the mood for the big game.

According to a press release from the zoo:

The orangutans participated in the fun with enrichment goodies like fries (cut baked potatoes), Redskins/Steelers banners (sheets they like to cover themselves with) and life-like quarterbacks made of straw (bedding).

Fair enough. But I bet they don’t travel to away games like the RFK does.

Anyhow, even in the National Zoo, Steelers fans had a strong presence:

According to all reports, though, the orangutan tailgate party complied in all ways with the new Fan Code of Conduct and ended without ever getting too out of hand.

  1. If we’re on a 5+ year wait list for season tickets and every home game is sold out. I want to say to all the ‘Skins fans who sold their MNF tix last night, shame on you! That place sounded like it was a Pittsburgh home crowd! How is our team supposed to have a home field advantage when our season ticket holders are selling that advantage away to opposing team’s fans. I know there will always be SOME opposing fans there, but c’mon… Last night was ridiculous!

Let’s STEP UP and help our team ‘Skins fans!

(And Matt, you’re doing a great job)
