Making “The Mayne Event”

Kenny Mayne’s idea for his Mayne Event segment this week centers around the “Hip Hip Hooray” cheer, which appears to have caught the public imagination in a way that I couldn’t quite have imagined when Zorn first broke it out at the Welcome Home Luncheon.

As Mayne explained to me when I spoke to him, these shoots are not simple — this one includes a lot of players — but he manages to execute the actual shooting quickly and with an impressive minimum of fuss. Here, with the help of Redskins PR, he’s grabbed the first four guys he needs — Chris Samuels, Jason Campbell, Antwaan Randle El, and Colt Brennan — as they came off the field after morning practice, and he quickly gets them briefed on what they’re doing and set up to shoot the establishing shot of the segment.

EDIT TO ADD: We’re having some problems with the video; I’ll have it fixed as soon as I can. Fixed, hopefully.

There are multiple takes, of course, but on the whole the process moves surprisingly quickly and the guys really seem to get into it.

The most unusual element of Mayne’s shoot, actually, turns out to have nothing to do with him at all.

Midway through one of the later takes, I catch this brief video:

It’s Clinton Portis, dressed entirely in camouflage, carrying a bag of blaze orange somethings. This, contrary to what you might suspect, does not happen here every day, and I assume it’s some sort of elaborately staged portion of Mayne’s sketch comedy.

But he doesn’t even notice, and the rest of the players were just as confused as I was. In fact, I didn’t fully find out what it was until I saw Cooley’s blog this morning, as the whole crew — Vladimir, the Wyoming Cowboy, and a new character — goes Ram hunting. Thursday, October 9, 2008: surreal comedy day at Redskins park, I guess.

  1. Hey Matt, great work on the blog, and the Kenny Mayne interview was very entertaining, but I have to ask: What did you film this with? A circa 1986 VHS camcorder? A webcam? A hangover?

  2. Hi Matt,
Will we be able to see the finished Mayne product????
    Go ‘Skins!

  3. If the finished product is available online, I’ll be sure to post it.

As far as the video quality, it looks good as an AVI, and looks … well, not-so-good when I upload it to YouTube. I’ll try to get the quality better.

  4. Sometimes there’s an option to play a video at a higher quality, IMO it looks much better when played back like that. Still not going to be convincing anyone that you are watching a DVD, but better than nothing.

Hopefully the final product turns out well. Seeing Portis in the background in fatigues just wandering by would actually make the final product that much better. IE: What the hell is going on over there in Ashburn?

  5. Nice post! Although I don’t know what to think about Kenny Mayne. He’s part Keith Olbermann, part Niles Crane, and part Beavis.

  6. Matt- why is Mayne saying Hip Hop hooray?
Is that like a new dance/cheer???
