Five Quick Questions With Vinny Cerrato on His New Show

Starting tomorrow, Redskins Executive VP Vinny Cerrato will be hosting a radio show on ESPN 980 for a total of four hours a week – from 10-12 on Mondays and Fridays. And here’s the thing that strikes you when you ask him about it: he seems legitimately enthusiastic to do it. I was able to get in a very brief conversation with him, to ask about plans for the show and his reaction to some of the skepticism following the announcement.

Let me start with the basics: what can we expect from the show?

Expect a lot of fan participation and a lot of talk about the Redskins. It’ll be predominantly about the Redskins, and giving the fans an opportunity to kind of hear what’s happening inside the team, and we’ll talk a little local college football and high school football too.

What sort of access will the fans be getting?

We’ll do call-in stuff. Opinions on what happened the day before in the game, and what to look for in the upcoming game.

Some of the online reaction feels that you taking time to do the show will take you away from your other responsibilities. Is that a concern to you at all?

No, none whatsoever. There’s plenty of time to have everything done. I just think it’s a silly question, because whoever has that concern doesn’t know my schedule.

What about talking about players on other teams – is that going to present a problem?

I won’t criticize players [on other teams]. Most of the talk is going to be about the Redskins. We’ll have some guests on that’ll talk about other things.

Is this part of an overall approach to make the organization more accessible?

I think it’s an access for the fanbase, definitely.

  1. This might be a silly question. I live out of the D.C. area (Georgia), and would love to hear the broadcast. How do I get a chance to hear it and will they repeat the show for people who are working then?

If you get a chance ask them if they’ll make it a podcast we can download.

And Vinny’s had great conversations with Pat Kirwan and Tim Ryan on Sirius satellite radio. Will he be planning to call in to there anytime?

  2. The Redskins are by far the most accessible team in the NFL. In terms of raw information that the team publishes, we’ve got more of our players taking interviews and having video posted than almost any other team that I’ve looked up. The Saints had squat video following their loss to us, but we had plenty of our guys talking about what happened in NY when it was the other way for us.

Its good to be able to hear the players own thoughts and opinions, as for Vinny… well that’s a different story. Not having heard Cerrato for more than a few minutes on Comcast Sports Net, the idea of him having his own 2 hour radio show seems… interesting. Whoever is responsible for the phones is going to have a fun time.

  3. Agree the Skins have the best access on the web. It still can’t take the place of unbiased observers 100% but it certainly makes being a long distance fan feel in the know.

I want the Skins to start winning regularly so this kind of development doesn’t come with any negative press until it proves to be negative. Didn’t Bobby Bethard and then Casserly have TV shows back in the day? And don’t coaches have shows every week? What’s the difference between being on the radio for two hours and doing a press conference?

Maybe this is crazy for Vinny to do, and it seems weird, but maybe GM’s take themselves too seriously and as long as the coaches and players are doing their jobs the team needs a GM not so much. Like does Jerry Jones sit in his office all day pulling his hair out watching tape? What about coaches who coach and run the FO because they’re on the field during practice focused on coaching does the GM stuff go to defcon 4? Seems four hours to chat Skins might be what he would be doing those hours anyway . . . And if it doesn’t work some el Gnome can fill the time slot. I have plenty to say about Skins Nation and a full 10% makes sense!

  4. Nonsense, we know his schedule….

    8:00AM: Wakeup
9:00AM: Deliver breakfast in bed to Mr. Snyder
    10:00-12:00 Do my radio show
12:00-2:00 Surf espn.com. those guys know a lot about the draft
2:00-4:00 Work on my fantasy team. Ocho Cinco is ready to break out.
4:00-5:00 Hang out with my boy Clinton
    5:00-6:00 Watch some tape
6:00-10:00 Go to Morton’s with Mr. Snyder for steaks and cigars
    10:00 Go to bed

  5. I wish that was my day.

And how about this for a topic for show #1 . . . What is a GM’s (or VP or whatever) roll during the season? The roster is set. The replacement roster short list is set. College scouts and Pro scouts are in the field. The coaches are scouring tape and bldg gameplans and making decisions about who plays and who sits. The med staff works with the coaches to determine inactives. What is the ‘key’ job for V right now? Future prep like the draft or is it game week prep? Running the day to day team operations?

After that let’s find out about the decision to keep all ten rooks from the draft class and what that means for the future draft classes. With that rate of return in five years the roster will have five years or less experience.

And as a personel guy, what concerns him the most – not injuries and so on – moving into week three? Punter? Special teams overall? Maybe Zorn getting consistent play out of JC week to week?

Wow – not earth shattering questions but maybe interesting.

How about his relationship with J-Lac? It’s kinda dysfunctional.

  6. How about coming to work with us again? Since Danny is the only one would hire (re-hire) you after Marty decided you stunk and you couldn’t find an NFL job.

  7. Other than JLC (who’s reasons for criticism I understand), I don’t get why Vinny doing a few hours of radio each week is such a big deal. Many Head Coaches around the league do radio and TV shows and regular appearances. I would think during the season that a HC would have far less time on their hands than a GM.

Anybody ripping Harbaugh for having a TV show?

The rip Vinny for every breath he takes thing is getting soooo tired.
