Rookies and Hall of Famers

This offseason, the NFL has taken some advice from Michael Irvin (of all unlikely-seeming sources) and is sending all of its rookies and incoming players to the Hall of Fame to give them a sense of the history of the game.

For whatever reason, presumably because the Redskins and Colts were going to be up here for tomorrow night’s game, they were left for last. Which works out great for me, since I got to tag along. Also with us, prepping the rookies on some Redskins history on the bus ride to Canton, were Joe Theismann, director of player development John Jefferson, Rick “Doc” Walker, and current enshrinees Sonny Jurgensen and Sam Huff.

There’s something faintly surreal about wandering around the Hall of Fame with Hall of Famers.

“Look at that,” Jurgensen said, “Sam can’t bear to walk away from his.” (Yes, they actually interact in person just like they have on Redskins Radio for countless years.) Sonny was less attached to his bronze bust, noting only that “they got the hair right,” but he did spend a few minutes looking quietly at a display case paying tribute to him and Charlie Taylor.

And the rookies seemed to be absorbing things as well. The tour started with an NFL Films special presentation, designed specifically for 2008 rookies, doing the usual impressive NFL Films job of giving chills and hammering their point home, in this case building a bridge between the stars of the past and the stars of today and tomorrow.

Did it work? Certainly seemed to make an impression…

  1. This comment is for the Redskin Tv crew. I moved to Raleigh N.C this year and I don’t get comcast sports. So I will be missing out on Redskin Nation and the Redskin Post game show. Is it possible that they put the video version of Redskin Nation instead of the audio version on there website, if so that will be great. Please email me and let me know and if possilbe let me if comcast is going to make Redskins Post Game Show available also. Thanks again, Anthony
