I’ve been frustrated by Chris Berman in the past — his schtick was much funnier when I was 15 — but his particularly brand of cheesy humor combined with a (seemingly) genuine love of the game makes him pretty well suited for the pageantry of hosting an outsized event like this.

And Roger Goodell elected not speak, which was odd. (And doubly so given that Berman introduced him as if expecting a speech. I suspect that made for some awkward TV.) Having heard Goodell speak earlier today (a bit more on that once I can post pictures), I guess he’s just a man of few words, but this seemed over the top.
