More Redskins TV This Weekend

In case you don’t have enough Redskins stuff to watch this weekend, there’s a new documentary made by the Redskins Broadcast Netwok, “Stories From A Super Season,” airing at 7:00 Saturday on WUSA 9 in DC.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the Super Bowl XVII championship team lately. Partly because Monk and Green are heading into the Hall, partly because coming to work here has meant people asking me about when I became a fan, and partly because that team’s echoes are felt all throughout Redskins Park. From the trophy display to team scout Don Warren to Bubba Tyer to radio guy Doc Walker, it’s impossible to turn a corner here and not be reminded about that season.

It’s become such a part of Redskins lore that I was afraid a documentary about the team would almost seem redundant, and that’s what was in my head when I sat down to an advance screening.

I’m happy to say that I was wrong. The documentary is (as I might have noticed from the title) about the stories about the team, not a game-by-game recap of the in-game action. The usual suspects show up to talk — Joe Theismann, John Riggins, Joe Gibbs, Dexter Manley — but some of the important pieces you don’t hear from as much are there also — Mike Nelms, Darryl Grant, Neal Olkiewicz, among others.

Some of the stories are familiar, but expanded with more detail and video (the five o’clock club), others I either didn’t know or had forgotten (they brought in a rookie to replace Mosley that year?). There’s a strong vibe of sitting around having a beer and hearing old war stories from the guys, and they’ve always seemed like the kind of amusing people you’d want to hang out with.

And there’s plenty of detailed coverage of the biggest in-game plays of the season. 70-Chip, 50-Gut, and Dexter Manley’s sack of Danny White all receive detailed analysis.

Look, I’m completely biased on this one. It’s stories I’ve never heard before about what might be my favorite football season of all time. But I thought this was an hour well-spent, and a nice way to prepare mentally for this weekend. If nothing else, hearing Riggins describe his experience AFTER Super Bowl XVII — a sentimental story rather than the debauchery you might be hoping for — gave me chills, and makes it worth letting you know about.

  1. Is there any way to see this online?
Good to get some Redskins history from afar!

  2. Is the HOF ceremony live to tape? If it airs live, why on earth would they air “Stories From A Super Season,” during the same time we’re watching the HOF ceremony?

I’ll be in Canton so I wont see it anyway but sheesh…. :)

  3. I will be in Canton too. Will they replay this?

  4. Aw, dude! This is going to be better than the game!

  5. Thanks for the tip. Just reading again about Manley’s sack gave ME the chills – I’ll definitely be watching (or taping).
